Cuyahoga River

This map is of a portion of the Cuyahoga River during the late 1800s. The blue  area on the map is of industrial areas and in this area is Cleveland Iron Mining Company, Averill and Bradford Lumber Yard, and a cement company were just some of the companies in this area. Also notice the large amount of train tracks and the train yard. Trains were important to get the iron ore and other goods to cities like Akron, Canton, Youngstown, and other cities.
This is an excellent photo of how small a gap some of these larger ships had to maneuver around the Cuyahoga River.
Grand Island working its way around the Cuyahoga River with men on the bank helping the guide line pull the ship around the corner.
Today there are a few busniesses along the river. Most of it however, is empty concrete slabs that are overgrown with weeds and small trees. Ships still travel the river but not as often as before when iron ore business was very prominent.
