This section highlights the geographic advantages of the greater Cleveland area and its impact on population in the 19th century.
Neighborhoods began to develop with their own names and cultural appeal.
Outlying farms areas were developed by successful business owners. These "areas" became Cleveland Heights, Euclid Heights, Lakewood and the most well known, Shaker Heights. Large houses and large lots became the standard of these areas. The Van Swearingen family helped establish the reputation of these areas by building a large estate and encouraging in the development of a lasting, desireable community.
