Cleveland Comes Full Circle

City Dwelling

The increasing population of Cleveland gave rise to city home establishments. Typical citizens of the city lived in apartments. The Jennings Apartment complex was one of the first "high rise" apartment buildings in Cleveland. Established in 1898, the Jennings complex stood six stories high and boasted of being one of the first buildings in Cleveland to have an elevator. This facility was located at Jennings Avenue, which is now W. 14th St. it was later demolished in the 1950s.

The continued population movement created a need for social settlement houses such as the Hiram House. Establishments such as this carried out social service work and served as home to those in need. The Hiram House was the first settlement house to be established in Ohio in 1896.
