The Cuyahoga River
Maps
The Cuyahoga River was formed about 13,000 years as a result of one of the last glaciers in the United States. Native Americans in the area named it "Cuyahoga" which means crooked river. In 1795, the Cuyahoga River was considered the western border of the Treaty of Greenville and was then the western boundary of the United States from 1795 to 1803.

The Cuyahoga River is 813 miles long. It is a short, shallow, slow moving, mud-banked river. In 1827, the mouth of the river at Lake Erie was reconstructed. The original mouth was in a very swampy, mosquito-infested area that was not suitable for travel.
