Hope Memorial Bridge
Guardians of Traffic
The picture at the top left is an architectural view of the Lorian-Carnegie Bridge. The architect was Frank Walker.
The pylons are art decco style and were designed by Frank Walker and sculpted by Henry Hering. They are 43 feet tall and were constructed of local Berea sandstone. They symbolize progress in transportation. There is a pair of pylons on each east and west side of the bridge, with a "Guardian of Traffic on each side equally 8 figures total. These guardians are holding a stagecoach, a passenger car, a covered wagon, and several kinds of trucks.
Do you know what is hidden in the pylons?
Nothing. These recesses are eight by ten feet. Originally there were brooms and carts along with other tools to maintain the bridge when it was hand cleaned.
