Hope Memorial Bridge
construction
In 1902, citizens presented a petition for a viaduct crossing between Lorain and Central. In 1925, a special committe of city planning commission recommended a Central Loraine bridge be built. In 1927, an 8 million dollar bond was approved. Realignment of the streets resulted in connection of Lorain Avenue instead of Central Avenue. Construction of the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge was finished in 1932.
The bridge consisted of 13 cantilever truss spans between 299 feet over the river to 132 deet at the ends. The bridge stands one mile high and is 4,490 feet long and was constructed of steel and concrete. Architecture was considered transitional between a stylized classicism and Modernistic or Art Deco. A lower deck with four lines of vehhicular traffic and two streetcar tracks was never completed. The bridge cost 4.75 million to build and was completed in 1932. A parade was held on July 2, 1934 to celebrate the completion of the bridge.
