Hope Memorial Bridge

Albert Porter

Albert Porter, Cuyahoga County engineer, was concerned that historical designation of the pylons would delay plans to widen the bridge.  The Ohio Historic Sites Advisory Board recommended unanimously the Western Reserve Historical Society's nominating of the bridge to the National Register of Historic Places.

Mr. Porter made the following statement as reported by the Cleveland Press in 1976:

"These columns are monstrosities and should be torn down and forgotten.  There is nothing particularly historic about any one of them.  We're not running a May Show here".

The bridge was not widened because it was named to the National Register of Historic Places in the late 1970's thus the pylons could not be removed.
