National Fallout Shelter Survey

Updating and deleting

The final survey that took place during the 1980s was used to create a final list of shelters for the county, and eventually for the entire country.  This update sheet shows the amount of recording that went into each survey.  In Cuyahoga County, there were over 2000 shelters in 1100 different structures, from the Terminal Tower to the Morton salt mine underneath Lake Erie.
An updated list of facilities no longer qualified as fallout shelters was also created.  There are a number of reasons that a facility would be removed from the list. Building demolition, abandonment, and changing population centers were some of the most common.
