WORLD VIEW: During the 1800s improvements in medicine, sanitation, and food distribution helped lead to an increase in population. In the United States and Europe, population growth was fastest in the more industrialized regions. As population grew, it also became more mobile. Large numbers of people began to move across national boundaries and oceans to foreign lands.
