The Cuyahoga River: Flowing Through Time
Introduction
Take a moment to reflect upon your first memories of your hometown. Think about what its like now. Does it look different? Are there businesses or stores that have moved away? Maybe there are new businesses that have moved into the area or have taken over previously vacated buildings. Have the people living there changed or moved away? Is there an increase in population, or has it decreased? What types of issues are of major concern to you, your parents, your friends, and your neighbors? Have these concerns changed over time?
Now ask yourself WHY these changes have occurred. Why have they occurred here in your hometown and what may have been the catalyst for these changes?
This exhibit is based on the following 8th grade geography standard as it relates to the Cuyahoga River:
"Comparing places and regions in the United States as they existed prior to 1877 with the same places and regions today to analyze changes in land use and population, political, social and economic characteristics." Our main focus will be on the Cuyahoga River and the changes that took place over time.
First, we will look at prior to 1877, when Native Americans and Early Settlers vied for controlled of the area.
Second we will take a look at the Industrial Age, and third at the Present Day.
