Tremont Walking Tour
Introduction
We set off on our tour after having lunch at Sokolowski's University Inn, an historic, family-owned restaurant that has been serving hearty Polish fare since 1923. Sokolowski's sits like an island outpost on Tremont's northwest edge in the shadows of the massive Innerbelt Bridge, oddly apart from the rest of the neighborhood. Indeed, interstate highway construction has left parts of Tremont cut off from one another, leaving an indelible mark on the neighborhood's geography. Ironically, it was the decision made by residents of Tremont and other older Cleveland neighborhoods to leave the city and move out into the suburbs that helped spur the development of the highway system in the first place. The commute into downtown Cleveland from the suburbs has been dramatically shortened, but many of Cleveland's neighborhoods have paid the price for this.
