The city purchased Edgewater Park, located on Cleveland's lakefront west of downtown, from an industrialist in 1894. Over the years a bathhouse, athletic fields, picnic areas, and other recreational facilities were added to the grounds. The beach, however, remained the most popular attraction on hot summer days.
