Description
Throughout the twentieth century, Cleveland has been home to one of the largest Slovenian immigrant populations in the world. Slovenes began coming to Cleveland in the 1880s to work in the city's bustling steel industry, forming communities and spending time at gathering places like the establishment seen here around 1890. At first, many Slovenes settled in the Newburgh and Collinwood areas or along St. Clair Avenue. More Slovenian immigrants came in the decades leading up to World War I, and immigration resumed after World War II, as political refugees left Tito's Communist Yugoslavia.
